INSTRUCTIONS TO ADVANCED DEGREE CANDIDATES

NO ADMISSION TICKETS required.
The ceremony is 2 1/2 HOURS.

The ceremony includes conferral of degrees and the individual recognition of candidates for doctoral degrees, educational specialist degree and master’s degrees. Candidates participating in the ceremony should remain for the entire ceremony. Your family and friends are invited. NO ADMISSION TICKETS are required.

Congratulations on your achievement and we hope that you will participate in your commencement ceremony.

Please note: There is construction at the Breslin Center. The Hall of History (Southeast) entrance is closed. Parking is limited in the area. We encourage all participants and their family and other important guests to use the Commencement Shuttle Bus Service. Buses are accessible. There is no charge.

For the safety and convenience of all commencement participants and guests, please be aware:

ALL bags are subject to search. To avoid delays, it is strongly recommended that bags are NOT brought to the Breslin Center.

NO food or beverages or other liquids are to be brought into Breslin Center. Please leave these items in your vehicle or discard before entering the facility.

For your family and guests, concession stands will open one hour prior to the start of the ceremony and remain open through at least the first 60-90 minutes of the ceremony. Menu is limited to hot and cold beverages and some snack items.

All advanced degree candidates must wear academic apparel to participate in the ceremony. 

Please be respectful as each graduate's name is read. It is important that each graduate received proper recognition and taht the ceremony is not disrupted.

Doctoral Degree Candidates: Doctoral candidates are hooded by MSU faculty. Each doctoral degree candidate may ask ONE MSU faculty member of your choice to hood you. Associate deans and other faculty representing the colleges will hood doctoral candidates without an accompanying faculty member. Please be sure your faculty member informs the dean’s office that s/he is participating in the ceremony. The colleges will distribute instructions to faculty.

To ensure that commencement exercises are enjoyed and memorable for all, we ask your cooperation in observing rules of decorum. Any visible items worn with your academic apparel should be appropriate for the occasion and should not detract from the recognition of any of our graduates. Flowers and decorative jewelry are not to be worn on your academic gown. Low-heeled, comfortable shoes are recommended.

INSTRUCTIONS: DOCTORAL, EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST AND MASTER'S DEGREE CANDIDATES

Due to construction and high traffic volume at Breslin Center, we strongly recommend COMMENCEMENT SHUTTLE SERVICE. Buses run every 10-15 minutes, Friday, May 5, Breslin Center. NO CHARGE. Shuttle buses are accessible. Golf cart transportation from the Birch Road shuttle stop will be available for those requiring assistance. View Shuttle Bus Service Map (pdf).

 

ACADEMIC APPAREL

Visit the Spartan Spirit Shop (last day to order online is Sunday, April 23) to order ANNOUNCEMENTS and CAP AND GOWN. Deadline and late fee apply to rental of doctoral degree academic apparel. With questions about announcements or cap and gown, please contact the Spartan Spirit Shop (MSU Union Building, 49 Abbot Road) at spirit@msu.edu or 517-355-5116. 

ASSEMBLY

Please report by 2:30 p.m. Name cards and photo cards are distributed at assembly.

Although photo cards are distributed at assembly and provided to the commencement photography company, you may pre-register at their website at www.graduationfoto.com/pre-registration.

Please have your guests hold coats and other belongings. The University is not responsible for coats or other belongings left unattended in the assembly or seating areas. Children are NOT permitted on the arena floor or in any of the degree candidate assembly or seating areas.

Master’s Degree Candidates:

Enter the building through the Service Tunnel/Drive on the south side of Breslin Center. Pick up your PHOTO CARD from commencement staff. Signs will direct you by college (right or left). Proceed through the hallway and into the Arena, and then to your college’s assigned bleacher seating. Commencement staff will distribute NAME CARDS at your assigned bleacher seating.

Educational Specialist Degree Candidates:

Assemble in the Auxiliary Gym. Take the stairs (near the Hall of History (Southeast) entrance) down to the Mezzanine level (next level down). Exit at the Mezzanine level and proceed to the Auxiliary Gym. NAME CARDS will be distributed by Graduate School staff. PHOTO CARDS will be on tables inside the gym.

Doctoral Degree Candidates:

Assemble in the Auxiliary Gym. Take the stairs (near the Hall of History (Southeast) entrance) down to the Mezzanine level (next level down). Exit at the Mezzanine level and proceed down the hall to the Auxiliary Gym. NAME CARDS will be distributed by Graduate School staff. PHOTO CARDS will be on tables inside the gym. Please line up at your college standard with the MSU faculty member hooding you. For candidates without an accompanying faculty member to hood you, there will be faculty members of your college available to hood you.

PROCESSIONAL

The processional will begin at 3:20 p.m. and proceed in the following order:

  1. Associate Deans leading Master's Degree candidates to the platform
  2. Alphabetically by college, Doctoral Degree candidates and Faculty members hooding them, and then Educational Specialists
  3. Faculty not hooding
  4. Platform Party

CONFERRAL OF DEGREES AND PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMAS

Tassels: Master’s candidates wear tassels on the RIGHT side of your cap and you will move it left en masse after the conferral of degrees.  All other candidates wear tassels on the LEFT.

Following conferral of degrees, candidates are led to the platform where NAMES ARE READ, and the President presents the token diploma. There will be at least one photo provided: 1) as President Lou Anna K. Simon presents you the token diploma, or 2) a posed photo before you return to your seat. Degree recipients are escorted back to your seats.

Doctoral Degrees:

Candidates rise at the invitation of the Dean of The Graduate School. The Dean directs the hooding of candidates. Candidates are hooded at your seats by your faculty members. The President confers the degrees. Recipients are seated. After conferral of the degree, recipients are escorted to the platform. The recipient's name is read.  The President presents the token diploma. There will be at least one photo provided: 1) as President Lou Anna K. Simon presents you the token diploma, or 2) a posed photo before you return to your seat. Degree recipients are escorted back to your seats.

Educational Specialist Degree and Master's Degrees:

Educational Specialist Degree Candidates rise at the invitation of the Dean of The College of Education and Master's Degree Candidates rise at the invitation of the Dean of your College.  The President confers the Educational Specialist Degree first and then confers the Master's Degrees. The President asks the Master's Degrees en masse to shift your tassels from right to left. The President asks you to be seated. The Educational Specialist Degree recipients are escorted to the stage. Master's Degree recipients will follow. Candidate's names are read. The President presents the token diploma. There will be at least one photo provided: 1) as President Lou Anna K. Simon presents you the token diploma, or 2) a posed photo before you return to your seat. Degree recipients are escorted back to their seats.

RECESSIONAL

After singing of the Alma Mater, the recessional takes place in the following order:

  1. Platform Party
  2. Doctoral Degrees with MSU Faculty Hooders, Educational Specialists, and Faculty Not Hooding
  3. Master's Degrees

GRADUATES WITH DISABILITIES

DIPLOMAS

Diplomas are mailed approximately one month after your degree has been awarded.
